Statement by the ANC Gauteng Province on the introduction of ANC Mayoral candidates in the province

Following our very robust system of internal democracy, as the ANC Gauteng Province we are pleased that we have now concluded the process of nominating Councillor candidates in all the 11 Municipalities; three Metropolitans; two Districts and 6 Local Municipalities.

We are contesting all the eleven municipalities. As we said at our Provincial Manifesto launch, the ANC remains humbled by the support that our people have given us over the years. We have never taken for granted the support that our people have given us and will continue to listen and work with communities in building strong and developmental local government.

We have therefore called this briefing to introduce to you the people of Gauteng and the country, men and women whom we consider suitable to lead our municipalities for the next term of office (2016-2021).

Our Mayoral candidates have emerged from communities and they have served our movement and people in different capacities including where they live.

We want to underscore a point that Gauteng is the most cosmopolitan and afro-politan province, on average it receives on average 1.2 million people who move into Gauteng every five years, coming from other provinces and outside of South Africa. For more than a century Gauteng has been a province of migrants because it is the economic hub of our country and the SADC Region. We remain a province of choice for many because of the work that we do through our municipalities in improving the lives of our people.

Having said this, today we would like to introduce our mayoral candidates for the three metros, two districts and six local municipalities. These are men and women that represent the best in the ANC and indeed the communities they come from.

Their collective political experience, governance skills, leadership capability, management and technical skills to execute the people’s mandate and the ANC’s commitment to gender equality will help us a great deal in driving the programme for radical transformation, modernisation and re-industrialisation of the entire Gauteng City Region.

Together with all our Councilor candidates, our Mayoral candidates constitute Team ANC which is going to lead us to a decisive and overwhelming victory on the 3rd of August 2016.

After the 3rd of August this team will work with other spheres and more importantly strengthen team Gauteng in building a strong, visible and people centred government in Gauteng.

The following candidates constitute the team;

1. West Rand District Municipality – Boyce Maneli (Male)

2. Merafong Local Municipality – Maphefo Letsie (Female)

3. Rand West City Local Municipality – Elias Mzi Khumalo (Male)

4. Mogale City Local Municipality – Peace Mabe (Female)

As the ANC we have no doubt that all the comrades will carry out their duties to the best of their abilities, whilst putting the needs of our people first. We take this opportunity to congratulate all our councillor candidates for the 2016 Local Government Elections.

As the ANC in Gauteng we urge you to embrace these capable men and women. We also urge you to vote in the coming local government elections on the 3rd of August and vote for the ANC.

With this team we will continue to change the lives of our people for the better.

The ANC expresses its gratitude to outgoing mayors who have served the organisation and the people of Gauteng province well during their term of office. We will continue to tap into their vast experience, which we believe will not be lost to the organisation.

ANC lives, ANC leads and ANC Works in Gauteng!
