114. Mr D V Bloem (COPE-FS) to ask the Minister of Police:

How many (a) protesters were (i) shot at, (ii) killed and (iii) arrested by the police for public violence and malicious damage to property during the service delivery protests in the past months and (b) of those arrested were (i) found guilty and (ii) sentenced?

REPLY:

(a)(i) Groups of people (protesters) generally range from 50 to 5 000 in number. It is therefore impossible to determine the exact number of people participating in these incidents Members trained to deal with such crowds using non lethal or less lethal means such as water canton and rubber rounds.

(a)(ii) No person was killed as a result of police action.

(a)(iii) The following arrests were registered on the Crime Administration System (CAS) relating to service delivery issues, in terms of cases for public violence and malicious injury to property from 2011-01-01 to 2011-03-10.

Arrests for public violence:  286   

Arrests for malicious injury to property: 10

Total arrests: 296

(b)(i) None have been found guilty as most cases are either still pending or in process.

(b)(ii) No sentences have been passed down as cases are either still pending or in process.
