"Thug dies with his last bullet!" - Daily Sun

The front page and lead story of SA's largest daily newspaper, October 11 2013

Daily Sun (October 11 2013) - SARAH MODISE was lying in bed in sexy pyjamas, drinking tea, when the thug burst into her shack. He ordered her out and there was a fierce gun battle with cops who had tracked him down . . . until the gunman ran short of bullets.

HE SAVED THE LAST ONE FOR HIMSELF - AND DIED FROM A SHOT IN THE HEAD!

Cops said the man was with two friends in a black VW Golf when it was stopped by two patrol cars in Thembelihle Squatter Camp, Lenasia, south of Joburg. They were going to search him, but the man walked towards one cop car, pulled out a gun and shot the driver.

Then he ran off into the squatter camp with the injured driver in hot pursuit. That was when he ran into Sarah's shack.

She told Daily Sun: "I was shocked when the man ran into my house and hid behind the door. He pulled out a gun, rubbed it with his shirt and pointed it at me," said Sarah.

"He ordered me outside and without asking any questions I ran for dear life."

Sarah (37) said she called the landlord and her brother and they ran to their next-door neighbour's shack.

"I heard gun shots and when it went quiet I ran even further away. I only came back when they stopped," she said.

She said by then there was a huge commotion, with a police helicopter and more vehicles rushing to the scene. "We later learned that the man had killed himself after runing out of bullets," said Sarah.

According to Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela, the Golf was stopped at about 7am. One of the men pulled out a gun and shot at the police vehicle, hitting the driver in the upper body. But the injured cop chased the man into the shack settlement.

Makhubela said it was suspected that all three men were in possession of stolen guns. While the drama was unfolding, the other two gunmen went to hide in another shack not far from the scene.

But residents tipped off the cops and they were arrested and will be charged with attempted murder. "Police will work around the clock until the motives of the men are established," Makhubela said.
