Results of the May 18 2011 local government elections in Cape Town:
The Democratic Alliance won Cape Town with 682,929 votes on the PR ballot (61,15%) and 675,020 on the Ward ballot (60,69%) giving it a total of 1,357,949 votes (60,92%). It won 78 out of 111 ward seats, and 135 seats out of 211 in total.
The African National Congress won a total of 731,247 votes (PR + Ward) and 73 seats in total, including 33 ward seats.
The voter turnout was 64,66% and 0,91% of ballots were spoilt.
In the 2006 local government elections the DA received 609,545 votes (41,85%) and the ID 156,550 (10,95%) - 766,095 votes (52,6%) combined. See tables below. Thus in 2011 the DA (now including the ID) increased the number of votes the two parties had received in 2006 by 591,854, a 77,3% increase. Its share of the vote increased by 8,31 percentage points.
The ANC actually secured 179,142 more votes than it did in 2006, a 32,45% increase. However, because this rise was so much smaller than that of the DA its share of the vote ended up falling by 5,11% points.
