THE ANC WELCOMES THE PERMANENT ESTABLISHMENT OF THE INVESTIGATING DIRECTORATE AGAINST CORRUPTION (IDAC).

The African National Congress (ANC) welcomes the gazetting of regulations that solidify the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) as a permanent unit within the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). This crucial milestone follows the signing of the NPA Amendment Act by President Cyril Ramaphosa prior to the May 2024 polls.
These developments reaffirm our nation's unwavering and resolute commitment to a comprehensive and sustained fight against corruption.
The transition from the temporary Investigating Directorate (ID), which has been operational since March 2019, under the President's proclamation, to the now permanent IDAC marks a significant and strategic milestone in enhancing our capacity to combat corruption. This includes the capacity to prosecute cases stemming from the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture.
Initially established to address the widespread corruption cases brought to light by the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and Public Investment Corporation (PIC) commissions, the Directorate faced challenges due to its temporary status and limited investigative powers, as well as the lack of a permanent workforce.
In this regard, the ANC views the gazetting of these regulations as a decisive step in strengthening law enforcement capabilities to defend the rule of law as a fundamental pillar of our constitutional democracy and showcases South Africa's commitment to maintaining the highest standards of governance and accountability.
With full police powers, IDAC can now conduct criminal investigations independently and with greater effectiveness. This new status enables IDAC to employ a dedicated team, including skilled police, forensic experts, and specialist investigators, ensuring the unit is fully equipped to tackle corruption at the highest levels to secure South Africa's future sovereignty and uphold the rule of law.
The ANC is confident that the establishment of this permanent Directorate will enhance our anti-corruption framework, which is part of the ANC's manifesto priority of tackling corruption — and will also significantly contribute towards the rebuilding of trust of South Africans in the democratic order and its institutions.
