Post NUM NEC a Press Statement
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) special National Executive Committee (NEC) met on the 16th of May 2017 at the Elijah Barayi Memorial Training Centre (EBMTC), in Midrand and among other things deliberated are the following;
The NUM Special NEC strongly rejected the reappointment of Brian Molefe at Eskom because he left Eskom under a cloud after a number of allegations were levelled personally against him and Eskom as an entity in the State Capture Report by former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela. It is questionable how Brian Molefe went back to Eskom. He never went through the process of applying for a job and never waited like any other person who applied for a job.
Brian Molefe has not been cleared by anyone. He failed to display leadership when allegations were levelled against him in the state capture report. He resigned and ran away. Brian Molefe has not been exonerated and why is he coming back to Eskom?
The NUM special NEC calls for President Jacob Zuma to set up a judicial commission of inquiry so that people like Brian Molefe and those implicated in the report can assist the commission with the allegations leveled against them.
The NUM is aware of Brian Molefe's populist stance on trying to woo the support of our members to his side by touching on very important sensitive issues that affect our members like the apartheid wage gap and the closing down of five power stations. If Brian Molefe can come back and say Eskom is not going to close down five power stations, it means that this thing of closing the five power stations was a myth and it can be reversed.
The NUM special NEC also resolved that the Central Committee (CC) of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), the biggest decision-making body of the organisation outside congress will meet on 8th and 9th June 2017 at the Saint George Hotel in Pretoria. The CC rally will be held on the 10th of June 2017 in Rustenburg. Over 700 delegates from the branches of the NUM throughout South Africa will attend.
