EFF denies pasting over DA election posters

Johannesburg - The EFF on Wednesday denied that it was pasting its voter registration posters over the Democratic Alliance's.

A photo taken in Boksburg shows an Economic Freedom Fighters poster pasted over one with DA leader Mmusi Maimane's image.

EFF elections spokesperson Veronica Mente was adamant that no EFF member was responsible for the poster.

"Somebody might have put it there deliberately to make us look like we are breaking the electoral laws," she told News24.

"Our EFF members are very much knowledgeable of the guidelines in terms of postering, so they wouldn't post a poster of EFF on top of another political party, irrespective of which one."

According to the Electoral Code of Conduct, which all political parties had signed, no one was allowed to destroy, remove or deface posters of other parties.

DA national spokesperson Refiloe Ntsekhe said it was disappointing.

"It's very sad that they have gone and taken our posters and used them for their own benefit."

She said the party would possibly lay a complaint with the Electoral Commission of SA (IEC).

There had been other cases.

"We can't go report them one by one. We have to make sure we do a joint complaint of all this vandalism or gorilla marketing tactics," Ntsekhe said.

A date for this year's local government elections had not been announced yet.

The first voter registration weekend would be held this weekend.

Mente said the EFF's election machinery was ready and the party would be in all 4392 wards around the country on voter registration weekend.

On Thursday, Maimane and Western Cape DA leader Patricia de Lille would be in Cape Town to raise awareness about the importance of registering to vote.
