How deep does the Richard Mdluli rot go? - Kate Lorimer

DA MPL says legislature must request briefing on police corruption in Gauteng

DA CALLS FOR URGENT ACTION ON POLICE CORRUPTION IN GAUTENG

If cops are covering for one another's criminal behaviour, how can members of the public be expected to put their trust in the Police Service?

I have written to the chairperson of the Community Safety Portfolio committee in the Gauteng Legislature, in view of the recent arrest of top Gauteng cop, Richard Mdluli, and the numerous allegations around cops covering up for him, asking for an urgent briefing on police corruption in the Province and the investigations and disciplinary action being taken to address the problem (see letter below).

It is extremely important for members of the committee to understand the scope of the problem and be informed about the plan going forward. Police corruption has huge implications for accountability of police in Gauteng, for police discipline and for the appointment and promotion procedures.

We need to know the following:

1. How many other cops are involved in the Mdluli investigation?

2. Have these cops been suspended pending an investigation?

3. How, why and by whom was Mdluli promoted to head of Criminal Intelligence in Gauteng?

4. Are other cops holding key positions in Gauteng Crime Intelligence being investigated ie. the operational head etc?

5. What interventions are being put in place to ensure this does not happen again?

Dear Chairperson

Re: Police corruption in Gauteng

I would like to request that the Portfolio Committee organise an urgent briefing on police corruption in Gauteng.

In view of recent arrests and allegations made against a number of top policemen in the Province I believe it is very important for the members of the committee to understand the scope of the problem we are facing and the investigations and disciplinary action being taken to address it.

I look forward to your response.

Many thanks

Yours sincerely
