MEDIA ADVISORY FROM THE VAVI FAMILY
September 4 2013
Over the last month, my family has been a subject of intense media scrutiny and political onslaught following disclosures by my husband, Zwelinzima, that he had had an affair with a married colleague. He has since apologised for this error of judgement which has caused untold pain amongst millions of South Africans including me and our extended family. Most South Africans from all walks of life, including thousands of his trade union comrades, have accepted his apology.
This issue has been personally, emotionally and politically taxing on us as a family. Still, we have accepted his apology and believe he has so much to give to South Africa and deserves another chance to make this contribution. I love him, and he retains both my respect and support.
On behalf of the extended Vavi family, I take this opportunity to thank the millions of South Africans, our friends, comrades and organised groupings here and across the globe who have given us so much support during this episode. Your thoughts, messages of support, wise words of encouragement and prayers have kept us strong. We owe you all a huge debt of gratitude!
Two weeks ago, my husband was placed on "special leave" pending unspecified disciplinary action against him by the federation. However, as is his right, he is challenging this action through appropriate channels. It is not for me to comment on the (de)merits of the case against him.
