Inquiry needed into Mpumalanga assassinations - Lekota

COPE president says political killings continue unchecked in province

COPE President Lekota calls for Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Mpumalanga Assassinations

COPE President Mosiuoa Lekota today called for government to constitute a Judicial Commission of Inquiry for the purpose of investigating a series of assassinations in Mpumalanga. Lekota said that the public deserves to know the truth behind the killings, which appear to be politically motivated.

"There appears to be an existing pattern of systematic elimination of public representatives, some of whom are known for their stance on being fiercely anti-corruption. If this is true, it needs to be dealt with decisively and in a transparent way. The best way to accomplish this is through a Judicial Commission of Inquiry

This call comes in the wake of the murder of the ruling partys chief whip in Ehlanzeni Municipality. Mbombela municipality speaker Jimmy Mohlala was murdered in similar circumstances, while James Nkambule's autopsy revealed that he had been poisoned. In the case of Jimmy Mohlahla, two police officers were arrested.

"When police officers are being investigated for these crimes, it is understandable that ordinary men and women who may have information are unwilling to come forward to the authorities out of fear for their own personal safety and that of their families. A commission of inquiry would give direction to whistleblowers, and comfort to the families of victims who know there is a chance for them to finally learn the truth.

"Under these circumstances, where high ranking public officials are alleged to be involved in cold blooded murder, it is important that a transparent and independent process is constituted. South Africans deserve to know the truth about what is happening in Mpumalanga".
