Limpopo govt puts a stop to shredding of books

MEC Namane Dickson Masemola says it was never intention to destroy usable books (June 26)

Media statement on shredding of books in Limpopo

26 Jun 2012

The MEC for Education in Limpopo, Hon Namane Dickson Masemola, learnt with shock about the destruction of books at MASTEC in Seshego, Polokwane. The intention of the project was only to destroy dilapidated, mutilated and unusable books.

He has since took the following decisions in response to the matter:

  • An immediate stop to the shredding of books.
  • That all those books should be taken to the warehouse.
  • That Curriculum section staff should inspect and identify those that are still in good condition and take them to schools with mini libraries or donate them to community libraries, crèches and other institutions where they can be used. This is to ensure that only unusable books can be shredded and taken for recycling.
  • The MEC has also ordered an investigation into what might have led to such an unfortunate situation.

The MEC would like to take this opportunity to apologise to the people of Limpopo and vows to take swift action against anybody responsible.

Working together we can do more.
