AgangSA leader discloses her finances, calls on President Jacob Zuma to do the same
AgangSA leader targets corruption by publishing personal accounts
"I call on President Zuma to disclose his finances immediately. What is there to hide?" Dr Mamphela Ramphele
Leading the way in the fight against corruption in South African politics, AgangSA leader Dr Mamphela Ramphele today published full personal accounts for the scrutiny of the South African people.
The move follows the latest in a long line of government tender corruption scandals that have seen conflicts of interest and billions of rands of public money wasted. The R270 million spent by President Zuma on his lavish Nkandla homestead has been greeted with anger and disbelief across the country. The money splashed on Nkandla could have paid for well over 13,000 RDP homes, badly needed in the rural KZN communities that neighbour Nkandla.
AgangSA has pledged to clean up government with tough anti-corruption measures including a ban on government officials and their families doing business with government and legal protections for whistleblowers.
At a briefing with South African and international media held at AgangSA's National Campaign Headquarters, Dr Ramphele said:
-->
"AgangSA is waging war on corruption. Masibakhupe kurhulumente abarhwaphilizi - let's kick these corrupt leaders out of government.
"We must have leaders who set the right example, that is why today I am opening my finances up for the South African people to scrutinise. This is what AgangSA means by a government that listens to the people and answers to the people.
"I call on President Zuma to disclose his finances immediately. What is there to hide?"
After almost 20 years since freedom, millions of South Africans still do not have access to clean drinking water, decent jobs and homes, quality education and healthcare. Rampant corruption is affecting South Africa's economy and the ability to create private sector jobs, increasing the cost of doing business and deterring foreign direct investment.
-->
"After 20 years of party leaders getting rich from government tenders our country is at a crossroads. Billions of rands have been wasted as text books, medicines and jobs are stolen from the poor.
"We must cut out this cancer wherever we find it. If we don't change course now then rampant corruption will rob every man, woman and child of their future. Leaders must earn the trust of the people who vote for them by showing they do not steal public money."
The party leader's clean bill of financial health was confirmed in a financial statement prepared in line with South African Parliamentary guidelines for Members of Parliament.
