ANC welcomes senior spy appointments

Ruling party condemns claims that Moe Shaik was being rewarded

ANC WELCOMES KEY APPOINTMENTS IN THE INTELLIGENCE

The African National Congress (ANC) welcomes key appointments in the intelligence, announced by State Security Minister Siyabonga Cwele today (Friday, 2 October 2009). We congratulate the new head of  the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) Lizo Gibson Njenje, director general of the State Security Agency (SSA) Mzuvukile Jeff Maqetuka and head of the SA Secret Service (SASS) Mo Shaik.

We also welcome Minister Cwele's commitment to restructure and transform the intelligence community.

The appointments will bring to the South African intelligence community the much-needed stability and leadership. All the three newly-appointed most senior intelligence officials possess a wide intelligence experience in the African National Congress (ANC) and in Government, having served in various capacities. We congratulate Njenje, Maqetuka and Shaik.

We reject with the contempt it deserves any notion that Mo Shaik's appointment has anything to with his brother Shabir. The ANC further condemns narrow remarks by the opposition which has described the appointments as "ANC reward".
