“Bible thugs terror!” – Daily Sun

“They wear church uniforms and pray for you – then all hell breaks loose!” – front page lead, April 16 2015

Daily Sun (April 16 2015) - THEY ARRIVE at the door dressed in church uniforms and quoting from the Bible.

They offer comfort and prayer, if the person behind the door lets them in.

BUT THEN THE VICTIMS ARE ROBBED AND MOERED.

The method of robbery is well rehearsed.

Once the home owner opens the door, the men open their Bibles and read from Matthew chapter 7, verse 7: “Ask and it will be given to you, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened to you.”

They ask the victim to close his eyes in prayer...and that’s when the thugs show their true colours!

The five thugs who operate in Etwatwa, near Daveyton, Ekurhuleni are not men of God at all. They may be carrying Bibles, but under their clothes they are armed with knives.

When the victim opens his eyes he finds himself staring into the sharp points of knives.

He is told to hand over all the valuable things in his house and if he refuses, he is moered.

Thulani Mnchunu (26) told Daily Sun he was moered when he refused to surrender his cellphone and television.

“They knocked on my door last week at about 7pm and told me they had been sent by angels to pray for me. I was fooled because they used the name of the Lord to get to me,” he said.

“They read the Bible and prayed with me but then I felt the cold blade of a knife against my neck.”

They demanded Thulani’s cellphone and cash but when he told them he only had R100, they overpowered him and moered him with fists and kicked him.

“They said they would stab me if I didn’t do as they said.”

The thugs took his cellphone and television and left.

Themba Mthimunye (23) claimed he was assaulted and threatened with a knife by the same thugs, who took his cellphone.

“We are no longer free in our own houses because we don’t know what they’ll come up with next,” he said.

Gogo Mary Mahlangu (60) said the thugs came to her house and told her they wanted to pray with her.

“I told them I had my own church,” she said.

“Luckily my burglar door was locked and they couldn’t get in.

“They kicked the bars and left,” said the gogo.

A case of assault was opened at Etwatwa Police Station which the cops are investigating.
