The Democratic Alliance (DA) is deeply saddened by news of the death of one of South Africa's greatest social scientists, Lawrie Schlemmer.
His life-work has been an exceptional contribution to South Africa. As an academic, his penetrating understanding of South Africa's political, economic and social landscape was unparalleled. He is rightly among the most revered social scientists South Africa has ever produced.
His impressive diverse list of achievements include, to name but a few: a stint as a social worker, Professor of Sociology, Vice-President of the Human Sciences Research Council, Vice-President of the Institute of Race Relations and President of South African Political Studies Association.
He will be sorely missed in his professional capacity and personally I will miss his sharp sense of humour and fun-loving character.
On behalf of the DA I would like to extend my deepest felt condolences to his wife, Monica, and their children.
