"Graca grieves for Mido!" - Daily Sun

The front page and lead story of SA's largest daily newspaper, March 7 2013

Daily Sun (March 7)- GRACA Machel did not speak publicly, but spoke quietly and directly to Emidio Macia's family members. Then Machel and Amelia Langa, Mido's cousin, embraced. THEY SHARED THE SOLIDARITY OF TWO WOMEN WHO HAD BOTH LOST LOVED ONES AT THE HANDS OF BRUTAL AUTHORITIES. More than 2 000 mourners - locals and Mozambicans - came to Sinaba Stadium to attend the memorial service for the 27-year-old taxi driver. But police were not welcome. When senior cops from the Daveyton Police Station arrived, they were jeered and insulted. "We have lost one of our brothers because you cops killed him. You are not welcome here. Get out. Leave!" shouted a mourner.

"Voetsak! Phuma! Hambani la!" shouted angry or crying community members as the cops were escorted out of the stadium. Also there were Mozambican community representatives, including members of the ruling party Frelimo, and the Mozambican ambassador. Speaking to the family, Graca Machel, whose husband died in a plane crash while he was president of Mocambique, told the family she had come to mourn with them. "I am touched by the death of Macia," she said. "I am here to find out if all is sorted with the burial arrangements. I will stay in contact and we will see how we can assist you," she said.
