"Kids ate my dog!" - Daily Sun

The front page and lead story of SA's largest daily newspaper, August 6 2014

Daily Sun (August 6 2014) - The BOYS were alone at home and they had nothing to eat.

So they stabbed a dog to death, ripped out its liver, skinned it, hung the intestines on the fence and fried the liver in cooking oil!

THEN THEY SATISFIED THEIR HUNGER WITH A MEAL OF FRESHLY COOKED DOG MEAT.

The two boys, aged seven and eight, said they stabbed the animal in the stomach and when it was dead they used their hands and the knife to cut out the liver. Then they broke into the house to get some cooking oil and fried the liver. After eating the meal, they dug a hole to bury the dog.

On Monday the news reached their school in Bankhara-Bodulong Township, Kuruman, Northern Cape where the boys are in grade 2. Social workers visited the school yesterday and were locked in a meeting with their parents. The mother of one of the boys said she left the boys with a friend to attend a funeral. How the boys got back to the house she didn't know. Other sources said when the boy was left in the township with a friend, other boys related to the friend also arrived. The friend chased them away but the boy and his nephew left with the other kids.  That is when they went home and killed the dog.

When Daily Sun caught up with the two pairs of neighbours, who are also relatives, they were screaming at each other over the fence.  The owner of the dog, Mika Matau, said she had nothing to say because she feared being attacked by her neighbour, but she added that she was very unhappy.

"The kids confessed to me that they had eaten the dog and hung the intestines over the fence," she said.

The fighting family members are not talking to each other and social workers are expected to visit the families on Friday to find out what the kids live on.

But only one of the mothers works, and only two days a week, while the other is unemployed and depends on social grants.

When Daily Sun asked the kids why they killed the animal, they simply said: "We were hungry."
