But when he intervened the bully turned on him as well.
HE PICKED UP A BRICK AND HIT THE GUARD ON THE HEAD, WOUNDING HIM FATALLY.
Security guard Daniel Chauke (45) was taken to hospital – but was declared dead on arrival.
According to a witness who is a pupil at Nkami High School in N’wa-dzekudzeku, outside Giyani, Limpopo, the bully was pushing pupils around in the food queue and taking their lunch on Thursday afternoon.
“The security guard went to him and politely asked him to stop what he was doing but the bully wouldn’t listen,” said the pupil.
He allegedly carried on pestering other kids until the guard told him to stop or face the consequences.
“That’s when the bully got angry. He grabbed a brick lying on the ground and hit the guard on the head with it,” said the pupil.
The guard, who was heavily bleeding, was taken to the nearest hospital.
But it was too late. The school governing body have called for a meeting between pupils, parents and police.
“We want the police to talk to our kids so this doesn’t happen again,” said Hlengani Maluleke.
He said the teachers and pupils have decided to donate money to help the Chauke family with the burial.
Police spokesman Warrant Officer Thomas Makhubele said the suspect has been arrested and will appear soon before the Giyani Magistrates Court on a murder charge.
Provincial department of education spokesman Dr Bernard Rasila said the department condemns what happened and promised to organise counselling for teachers and pupils.
“We are going to allow the law to takes its course because we won’t tolerate such behaviour in our schools,” said Rasila.
