KZN activist network defends Gordhan

Durban - The Merebank Justice Network (MJN) on Wednesday called the charges of fraud levelled against Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan a "serious concern".
"We sincerely believe that political considerations should not result in prosecution by the NPA. We trust that this is not the case and believe in the judiciary and the rule of law and that they will be proved innocent of the charges," MJN said in a statement.
The network - made up of a number of struggle stalwarts, religious leaders, business, and activists - said it was concerned and alarmed with national developments in recent months.
MJN raised funds for Gordhan and former Sars Commissioner Ivan Pillay to the tune of R100 000 to assist them with any possible legal costs.
"We will redouble our efforts to raise more funds now that these charges are a reality. The MJN has opened an account to receive funds and urges the public to contribute."
The organisation further called for public to show support for Gordhan by heading to court on November 2, when he will appear.
"We call upon people in other centres around the country to organise similar demonstrations at courthouses or Sars offices in major cities."
KZN MEC also backs Gordhan
Meanwhile, KwaZulu-Natal Human Settlements and Public Works MEC Ravi Pillay added his voice to the chorus of support for Gordhan and Pillay.
"They have been my mentors and comrades for four decades. Their track records in struggle and public office is the standard by which we should strive. I have every confidence in their honesty, integrity and commitment to building the national democratic society."
Gauteng Premier David Makhura and ANC chief whip Jackson Mthembu have also made compelling statements of support.
Pillay added that he was inspired by the sacrifice and discipline of Ivan Pillay while in exile in Swaziland and in the ANC underground.
Pillay also expressed his strong belief that justice would prevail, saying that they "will be watching proceedings every step of the way".
Gordhan faces charges of fraud over Ivan Pillay’s early retirement.
