ActionSA welcomes Premier’s leave, demands equal treatment for all high-ranking officials implicated in Free State corruption scandal

ActionSA acknowledges the ANC’s decision to place Free State Premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae on a month-long leave amid serious allegations of corruption and money laundering. While this may appear as a step toward accountability, it raises further concerns about selective justice and transparency. Notably, the Premier’s husband, Mangaung Metro Speaker Lawrence Mathae, and former Premier and current Free State Provincial Legislature Speaker, Mxolisi Dukwana, are similarly implicated in this corruption scandal. These allegations demand equal scrutiny, and ActionSA calls for them to be placed on leave immediately to allow for an impartial investigation.

Adding to the troubling developments, the ANC’s swift appointment of Jabu Mbalula, brother of ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula, as Acting Premier raises suspicions about the integrity of the party’s actions. This decision, made immediately after Premier Letsoha-Mathae was placed on leave, appears to be a calculated move that prioritises political loyalty over genuine accountability. ActionSA questions the timing and motives behind Mbalula’s appointment, as it undermines the ANC’s claims of commitment to fighting corruption.

ActionSA stands firm in the principle that no one is above the law, especially those entrusted with public office. Allowing implicated officials to retain positions of influence undermines the Free State’s public trust, which is already fragile due to pervasive issues of unemployment, poverty, and corruption. ActionSA calls for urgent, independent investigations by the Hawks, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), and the Public Protector into all officials involved, including Premier Letsoha-Mathae, her husband Lawrence Mathae, and Speaker Mxolisi Dukwana.

Only with genuine accountability and transparent action can the Free State hope to rebuild trust and deliver the services its people deserve. ActionSA remains committed to advocating for ethical governance and will continue to hold officials accountable for the rampant corruption hindering progress in the province.
