"Schools of shame!" - Daily Sun

The front page and lead story of SA's largest daily newspaper, May 8 2013

Daily Sun (May 8 2013) - WHILE the ANC government frets about the fall-out from the Gupta Wedding Fiasco, here's a REAL disgrace! More than 310 schools in the Eastern Cape have "died" because parents have pulled their children out. THEY'RE SENDING THEM TO PRIVATE SCHOOLS TO GET A PROPER EDUCATION!

The schools have been "unofficially closed", says the province, "because of a drastic decline in learner enrolment". It described the closures as "a natural death".

Grahamstown is the most affected area in the province, with 53 schools shut down. In King William's Town 38 have closed down. In Port Elizabeth, New Brighton, five primary schools have shut down. The education department is using three of them for merger schools.

Two have been turned into dumpsites and hiding places for criminals. Parents have told Daily Sun it's "better" for the schools to shut. They claimed: Teaching by unskilled teachers is poor; Teachers come to school late and leave early; They are only interested in money and permanent posts.; Teachers send their kids to private schools for better education, then "kill off" public schools; Teachers are always on strike and leave kids unattended; Teachers fight about posts and forget about teaching....
