Send the bill to Malema – John Steenhuisen

DA wants Parliament's clean-up and repair costs to be made public and demands EFF must pay

Parliament’s clean-up bill must be sent straight to Julius Malema

18 May 2016

The DA will write to the Speaker of Parliament, Baleka Mbete, and its Secretary, Gengezi Mgidlana, to request that they publicise Parliament's clean-up and repair costs following the EFF’s violence and destruction on the precinct yesterday afternoon.

We will also demand that the bill not be paid by the public, through Parliament and its budget, but by Julius Malema and the EFF.

The EFF's violence and destruction yesterday is not an acceptable form of holding Zuma accountable. It only undermined the integrity of Parliament, and was an assault on our Constitution and the principles which underpin it.

Their conduct also demonstrated that they are prepared to use violence to get their way and clearly are not a party that can be trusted by South Africans to take our country forward again.

The DA however will continue to hold President Zuma accountable for his criminal conduct using the mechanisms of the Constitution and the law.

We also call on SA to vote out corrupt leaders like Jacob Zuma and hold the ANC accountable for defending and protecting him for this long.

Issued by John Steenhuisen, Chief Whip of the Democratic Alliance, 18 May 2016
