104 /135 DA Cape Town councillors declare support for Maimane - Campaign

Geordin Hill-Lewis says endorsement is a sign of the PL's popularity in the WCape

104 Cape Town Councillors pledge their support for Maimane

4 May 2015

Candidate for DA Federal Leader Mmusi Maimane has received a letter of public support from 104 out of the 135 DA Councillors in the City of Cape Town.

The letter, sent on behalf of DA Cape Metro Chairperson Shaun August, says:

“We have come to the point where we need to come together to define the future of our party and our country. We represent 872 000 voters in this City, and the responsibility lies with us to define the future of South Africa and make sure that this democracy succeeds. Mmusi Maimane is what South Africa needs. Let’s make the right choice and make Mmusi Maimane our leader.”

That 77% of Cape Town councillors are willing to publicly endorse Maimane is an indication of his popularity in the Western Cape -- the province with the highest number of voting delegates to Congress. It follows recent public endorsements from Western Cape Leader Patricia de Lille and her newly elected executive management team.

It is significant that so many DA councillors back Mmusi Maimane for Federal Leader. DA councillors want a leader who can win the DA more seats on more councils at next year’s local elections. Maimane is seen as the only candidate who can deliver that.

Four provincial leaders and the Leader of the DA Youth have now publicly supported Maimane for Leader. Over half of Gauteng delegates have publicly pledged support, while a poll conducted by Rapport newspaper found that 83% of delegates were planning to vote for Maimane. The other 17% were undecided.

The momentum behind the Maimane campaign is building by the day. We will continue with our positive campaign focused on sharing Mmusi's vision for our party and our country.
