51 more Gauteng delegates declare their support for Maimane - Campaign

Geordin Hill-Lewis says there is a groundswell of support for PL's candidacy for DA leadership

51 more Gauteng delegates publicly pledge their support for Maimane

3 May 2015

Candidate for DA Federal Leader Mmusi Maimane has received a new letter of public support from 51 Gauteng delegates. This brings the total number of public pledges from Gauteng to 195.

This is the second letter sent to Maimane by DA Chief Whip in the Gauteng Legislature, Mike Moriarty MPL. Moriarty wrote:

“I am pleased to advise that pursuant to the media release earlier in the week, a number of Gauteng public reps that are supporting you wanted their names to be made known. Accordingly, the colleagues from Gauteng listed below wish to congratulate you and indicate that we will be voting for you in the upcoming Federal Congress. We wish you every success.”

This letter is significant because it indicates that more than half of Gauteng’s 373 delegates have now come out and publicly declared their support for Mmusi Maimane. The Maimane Campaign’s own canvassing indicates that many more Gauteng delegates are planning to vote for Mmusi on 10 May.

This latest public declaration of support follows public endorsements from four Provincial Leaders and the Leader of the DA Youth. In addition, Rapport newspaper reported today that 125 out of a sample of 150 delegates said that they were voting for Mmusi Maimane. The other 25 were still undecided.

There’s a groundswell of support inside and outside the party for Maimane to become the next Leader of the Democratic Alliance. DA delegates want a Leader who can connect with voters and grow the DA’s support in new markets. This is what Maimane offers, which is why the majority of delegates are behind him.
