UCT response to Sara Gon’s comments

Sara Gon has lost sight of an important fact: we are living in a time of incredible change in South African and higher education overall that affects all of us. A university’s role in a rapidly changing society such as South Africa is to help create leaders who can steer change that will build and strengthen society. It is indeed a challenge at a time of financial constraint to make commitments towards activities like building additional residence space, insourcing staff members and seeking additional academic staff. We feel it is worth taking on this challenge to help advance transformation in a sector that is preparing South Africa’s future leaders.  UCT will not, however, sacrifice the quality of our education or research, as these are the core functions of the institution.
