Correctional Services Minister Mapisa-Nqakula launches a names change campaign

Correctional Services Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has announced a names change process for some Correctional Centres nationally in an advertising campaign started today, 23 January 2011.
Eleven correctional centres have been identified for renaming as part of recognising "their place and role in shaping" the history of South Africa. These correctional centre are Johannesburg, Pretoria Central and Leeuwkop in Gauteng; Barberton and Modimolle in the Limpopo/Mpumalanga/North West Region, St Albans and East London in the Eastern Cape; Pollsmoor in Western Cape; Kroonstad in the Free State/Northern Cape Region; as well as Durban Westville and Pietermaritzburg Correctional Centres in KwaZulu-Natal.
The advert says the renaming will recognise "key event, geographic significance and personalities associated with these facilities". The minister established a task team led by Chief Deputy Commissioner Zach Modise which will also hold consultative meetings in the affected areas. Members of the public, stakeholders and all interested parties are requested to submit suggestions and motivations of not more than 500 words for consideration.
