1.3 billion k/l of water wasted annually due to dilapidating infrastructure
17 May 2023
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape expresses deep concern over the staggering water losses caused by infrastructure failure, reservoir overflows, and leakages from distribution systems, resulting in a national annual wastage of 1,3 billion kilolitres. This equates to a distressing daily loss of 3,6 million kilolitres.
The dire situation demands immediate attention; therefore, the Western Cape Standing Committee on Local Government will be inviting the National Department of Water and Sanitation for a briefing on the status of water losses in the Western Cape.
These national figures from 2021 likely underestimate the current extent of water loss, considering the severe battering endured by water infrastructure due to persistent high levels of load shedding over the past few years.
Water infrastructure has been neglected for years, and it now requires, an estimated investment of almost R90 billion over the next 10 years to upgrade water infrastructure nationwide.
