2010 World Cup bribe claims: Danny Jordaan must explain - DA

Solly Malatsi says Dr Irvin Khoza and Dr Molefi Oliphant should also be summoned to parliament

2010 bribes: Danny Jordaan must appear before Parliament’s Sport Committee to explain

28 May 2015

The DA has written to the Chairperson of Parliament's Sport Committee calling for the urgent summoning of SAFA President, Danny Jordaan, to explain allegations that South Africa's 2010 Bid Committee facilitated bribes to secure the hosting rights for the 2010 World Cup.

It is a national shame that one of the proudest moments for our democratic nation has been tarnished by this latest scandal, in addition to the unresolved allegations of match fixing involving Bafana Bafana's friendlies in the lead up to the tournament.

As the CEO of the Bid Committee, Danny Jordaan oversaw the 2010 bid strategy. His role in these allegations must be probed.

The Chairperson of the Bid Committee, Dr Irvin Khoza, and the then SAFA President, Dr Molefi Oliphant, must also be probed to determine whether they were aware of this, or are possibly culpable.

A transaction of the magnitude of $10 million would not have happened without the knowledge of the most senior figures leading the country’s bid for the World Cup.

South Africans have the right to know how the country really won the 2010 World Cup bid, and if monies that were intended to benefit the country exchanged hands inappropriately in our name.

The DA will ensure that the people of our country are given the truth.
