Abbey Marokoane fired for gross misconduct - Gauteng DoH

Dept says disciplinary action taken against chief risk officer following his arrest in November 2014

SUSPENDED SENIOR OFFICIAL FIRED FOR GROSS MISCONDUCT

WEDNESDAY, 11 MARCH 2015

The Gauteng Health Department has dismissed a senior official in its risk management and internal controls after he was found guilty of gross misconduct.

Mr Abbey Marokoane, a former Chief Director: Risk Management and Internal Controls in the Gauteng Department of Health; was suspended on 9th December 2014 following allegations of serious misconduct. This followed his arrest, appearing at the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Pretoria on 28 November 2014 and being granted bail.

A disciplinary hearing was finalised at the end of January 2015 which found him guilty of gross misconduct.

The department views the transgressions of this senior official in the serious light.  Lack of integrity feeds corruption and tarnishes the image of the department. Public healthcare is the only hope for the majority of people who cannot afford private healthcare.

The department views this as the closing of chapter in this matter and hopes it sends a message to all healthcare workers to remain honest and accountable for their actions.
