16 April 2024

The African Nation Congress Youth League (ANCYL) warmly welcomes the intervention by Kwa-Zulu Natal and Eastern Cape to advertise an additional 120 and 138 posts respectively.

aiming to employ all unemployed medical doctors in their respective provinces. Our engagements with the respective departments of health have yielded these positive outcomes.

We commend the planned interventions led by Department of Health MEC Nomagugu Simelani-Zulu in KZN and Eastern Cape MEC of Health Nomakhosana Meth to address unemployment among post-community service medical officers and other essential health professionals.

This proactive step, responding to calls from the ANCYL, trade unions, and broader society, is crucial, as patients currently endure extended wait times in hospitals and clinics nationwide.

The current patient-to-doctor ratio of 1:3198, as reported by the World Health Organization, underscores the urgency of these interventions. Prolonged wait times contribute to a heightened mortality rate in our healthcare facilities, emphasizing the need for swift action. The advertised vacancies in Limpopo province represent a significant step towards addressing this critical issue. We encourage qualified individuals to apply for these positions through the provided channels.

As announced by the Minister of Health, Dr. Joe Phaahla, on March 6th, an additional R3.7 billion has been allocated to the wage bill for the recruitment and compensation of healthcare workers. We believe that our ANC-led government is moving in the right direction to deal with staff shortages in our hospitals and clinics, and we commend Minister of Health Dr. Joe Phaahla for providing much-needed political leadership in the Department of Health.

Health is an essential need that must be prioritized. Investing in healthcare workers not only addresses the immediate need for medical personnel but also contributes to the overall improvement of healthcare services and outcomes in communities. By ensuring adequate staffing levels, provinces can enhance access to quality healthcare, reduce wait times, and improve patient outcomes.

Additionally, employing healthcare workers stimulates economic growth by creating job opportunities and supporting local economies. It also demonstrates a commitment to upholding the right to health for all citizens, aligning with the principles of social justice and equality.

Therefore, prioritizing the allocation of budgets for healthcare worker employment is not only a practical necessity but also a moral imperative for provinces across the country.

The ANC Youth League urges qualified healthcare professionals to seize this opportunity to contribute to the enhancement of healthcare services in Limpopo, fostering a healthier and more prosperous future for all. Issued by the African National Congress Youth League.
