AfriForum to assist in fight to retain Afrikaans in schools

Organisation says it will contribute to legal costs of the urgent court application by FEDSAS in Gauteng

AfriForum contributes to legal costs for the retention of Afrikaans in schools

Quality and mother tongue education is of high importance to the civil rights organisation AfriForum. Therefore the organisation will contribute to the legal costs of the urgent court application by the Federation of Governing Bodies of SA Schools (Fedsas) against the altered school registration process, and will at the same time support Afrikaans single medium schools that might be changed to parallel medium schools.

Education MEC, Mr Panyaza Lesufi, is of the opinion that these changes will make schools more accessible to learners and that schools that are not fully utilised will be utilised better.

“AfriForum and Fedsas feel that schools must have control over their own registration and language policies. Parents should have the right to choose schools for their children based on their language preference,” says Carien Bloem, Campaign Coordinator for Education and Training.

Parents are urged to register their children at a school of their choice before 26 May 2015.  Late applications will not be accepted, which will lead to learners being placed in schools with available space, whether or not it is the preferred schools of the parents.
