Office of ANC Chief Whip urges quick end to Parliament labour dispute

Strike has the potential to impact the institution’s operations

PARLIAMENT STAFF AND MANAGEMENT URGED TO SPEEDILY RESOLVE LABOUR DISPUTE

The Office of the ANC Chief Whip notes with concern the continuing strike by parliamentary staff belonging to Nehawu regarding certain demands relating to the details of the agreement reached with Parliament management earlier this year.

We remain concerned by the strike, which has the potential to impact on the operations of Parliament and the intensive programme of both the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces in the few remaining weeks of the 2015 parliamentary programme. The chief whips of various political parties were this morning appraised of the situation as well as the on-going negotiations between the management of parliament and staff representatives. The special caucus of the ANC also reflected on the matter this afternoon.

We share the view of all chief whips of political parties that parliament management must be given space to engage meaningfully with the representatives of staff to speedily resolve the issues in dispute. We remain confident in the capability of the two parties reach a consensus.
