ANC CONCERNED ABOUT COMMENTS THAT DENIGRATE ANY PERSON

African National Congress is concerned about public statements that denigrate any person, not only its own leaders.

It is therefore engaged in discussions with ANC Youth League President  Julius Malema about recent unfortunate comments he has made.

These include certain comments made about Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) President Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi.

The ANC does not endorse statements from its members that seek to denigrate and vilify leaders of other political parties, no matter how strongly we may disagree with those leaders.

Particularly as we enter the elections period, it is essential that we avoid any language that may increase tensions. This is important not only in the province of KwaZulu Natal, but across the country.

The ANC wishes to affirm its respect for Prince Buthelezi as a national leader who plays an important role in the country's public life. The ANC continues to value his contribution to the process of nation-building.

Whatever political differences may exist, the ANC is determined to work with Prince Buthelezi and the IFP to consolidate peace and stability in KwaZulu Natal, and to find common ground on the critical issues that affect our people.

The ANC believes that the Youth League has an important role to play in advancing this effort.
