ANC Gauteng on regional conference outcomes

PEC reiterates that elections will not result in changes of leadership in municipalities

THE PEC IS VERY HAPPY WITH THE REGIONAL CONFERENCES IN GAUTENG

The PEC met today to prepare for the Provincial Alliance Summit which is scheduled to take place on the 24 - 25 September 2011. The PEC also received reports on the regional conferences held over the weekend. The PEC is unanimous in its view that the regional conferences have been conducted in accordance with the ANC Constitution. Further, the PEC is very happy that the outcomes of the regional conferences at Ekurhuleni and West Rand represents the democratic views and wishes of the overwhelming majority of the members of the ANC in these two regions. The elections were free and fair and the debates were robust and frank, in the true traditions of the movement.

In respect of the Ekurhuleni Regional Conference, the total number of voting delegates that was approved by the Regional Conference itself was 268. In the actual voting process, a total of 267 delegates participated in electing the Regional Executive Committee. Similarly, in the West Rand the approved voting delegates were 199 and electing delegates was 197.

The elections were administered by an independent administrative agency, namely, the Elexions Agency, and the outcomes were verified by the Electoral Commission composed of representatives of the Provincial Executive Committee and regional representatives of the SACP, COSATU, SANCO, MKMVA, ANCYL and ANCWL. The agency is also satisfied with the results.

The PEC condemns the article published in the Star Newspaper today written by Baldwin Ndaba about the Ekurhuleni Conference. The article is inaccurate and completely distorted issues to propagate lies and misinformation. The ANC Gauteng will file a complaint to the Press Ombudsman about the conduct of the journalist in question because he is prone to reporting in a factional and prejudicial manner.

The two conferences were conducted with high level of discipline and political maturity. The conferences elected new leadership and emerged united. They further adopted high quality resolutions which will rejuvenate the organization and improve policies of the ANC.

The outcome of the conferences will strengthen and build the organization to ensure the ANC addresses the pressing challenges faced by the people. We are satisfied that the issues discussed in the conferences will place our province in a position to forge ahead with speed in implementing the ANC's priorities which are informed by the plight of our society.

The ANC Gauteng will remain stable, focused and united in serving the people. The following top five leaders were elected in the regions:

Ekurhuleni leadership

1. Chairperson - Moses Makwakwa

2. Deputy Chairperson - Queen Duba

3. Secretary - Tshilidzi Munyai

4. Deputy Secretary - Thandi Mahlangu

5. Treasurer - Mlungisi "Ting Ting" Rapodile

West Rand leadership

1. Chairperson - Mpho Nawa

2. Deputy Chairperson - Sanele Ngweventsha

3. Secretary - Boyce Maneli

4. Deputy Secretary - Maphefo Letsie

5. Treasurer - Merriam Mogoje

We reiterate the position that the regional conference elections will not result in changes in the current leadership of municipalities. The regional leadership will focus on development priorities and urgent service delivery issues raised by communities during the local government elections. The Johannesburg and Tshwane regional conferences will take place at the end of this month.
