ANC holds 3 wards in by-elections, wins 2 more - ANC

Zizi Kodwa says defeat of DA in Joburg ward, and of COPE in NCape, proves it is not weak in these areas

ANC STATEMENT ON BY-ELECTIONS OUTCOME

The African National Congress welcomes the outcomes of the municipal by-elections held in 20 wards across 6 provinces yesterday, 2 July 2014. Once again we congratulate the Independent Electoral Commission for delivering credible, free and fair elections all South Africans can have confidence in. Many of these by-elections were held as a result of the mass exodus of DA and other opposition councillors to the ANC before the General Elections held earlier year.

Of the 20 wards contested, the ANC retained all 3 of the wards it had won in the 2011 Municipal Elections, we have further won an additional two wards - one initially held by the DA in the City of Joburg and another that had been a COPE ward in the Northern Cape. Both these areas incidentally had been claimed by pundits as areas where the ANC is weak. At the polls the people of South Africa have proven this is not so and have rejected these opposition parties in favour of the party they know has the capacity, experience and commitment to move South Africa forward.

The African National Congress is grateful to all people who came out once again to cast their vote, entrenching democracy in our country. As an organisation, we do not take for granted the confidence our people continue to demonstrate in the African National Congress and commit to redouble our efforts to continue to strengthen the capacity of local government to deliver even better.
