ANC IN BITOU INCITING VIOLENCE AGAINST DA MEMBERS AND SUPPORTERS
It has come to light that the ANC in Bitou, has threatened and attacked DA supporters and members in the KwaNokuthula area in Bitou. Reports have indicated that the previous ANC Mayor of Bitou, Lulama Mvimbi, is actively inciting violence amongst ANC members, encouraging them to attack known DA supporters and members (see 2011 and 2006 election tables below).
Last Thursday (19 May 2011) about 200 ANC members marched to the house of the DA mayoral candidate, Memory Booysen, and protested in his yard and nailed ANC placards to his door.
Mr. Booysen was not there at the time and Police informed him of what was happening. The police suggested that Mr. Booysen should not return home for fear of his safety. Mr. Booysen was also threatened by ANC supporters, saying that they will "take him out".
On Saturday, (23 May 2011) two known DA supporters were attacked by two known ANC supporters. They were told to take of their DA t-shirts and that they should support the ANC. They have opened cases of assault at their nearest police station.
I have spoken to the Provincial Minister of Community Safety, Albert Fritz, and he has alerted the Police in Bitou to ensure the safety of the people in the KwaNokuthula community.
