ANC intimidates women during 16 Days of Activism – Dean Macpherson

DA KZN lays charges against wife of mayor after members threatened with violence at peaceful march

ANC intimidates women during 16 Days of Activism

7 December 2016

The Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal has laid criminal charges, (Case number: 221/12/2016) against Angel Mchunu, who is the wife of Richmond Mayor, Joseph Mchunu. Angel Mchunu is a PR Councillor in UMgungundlovu East District.

This follows an incident last week where DA Women’s Network (DAWN) members were intimidated and threatened with violence during a peaceful march aimed at bringing awareness against women and child abuse.

The peaceful walk was disturbed by Mchunu and other ANC members, who gathered in numbers and blocked women who were part of this walk. A hail of insults were thrown at them and violence ensued.

DAWN in KZN strongly condemns this incident that happened during the time when the country mark 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Children abuse.

The DA is concerned at the manner in which the activists were treated by the ANC during 16 Days of Activism. Intimidation and violence against women and children is all too prevalent in rural areas, and UMgungundlovu East Constituency is no different.

The DA will also make a statement on the issue in the National Assembly, condemning the ANC for their actions.

South Africa belongs to all and everyone has a right to take part in a peaceful march. The DA will be following up on this issue to make sure justice is served on those hell bent on bringing back no go areas that were abolished many years ago.
