ANC COMMENDS THE APPOINTMENT OF MOYA AS THE MERCURY EDITOR

22 November 2014

The African National Congress has welcomed the appointment of Fikile-Ntsikelelo Moya as the editor of The Mercury newspaper, describing it as a positive step that complements media transformation in South Africa.

"Moya's appointment to edit The Mercury is highly commendable as it shows that the Independent Media pays attention to transformation. It is an unquestionable truth that despite numerous calls for the media industry to transform, the process of transformation has been moving at a snail's pace in some media organisations in the province of KwaZulu Natal in particular. Moya's appointment brings hope that one day our country will have a completely transformed media industry at all levels," said ANC provincial Secretary Cde SihleZikalala.

He raised concerns that many media institutions continued to pay lip service to transformation. "The media ownership still remains in the hands of the few and it is highly monopolised while news rooms also remain largely not transformed. As the ANC we call on all media institutions in KwaZulu-Natal to objectively assess their commitment to transformation and emulate the good move which has been done by the Independent Media."

The ANC would continue engaging all media houses to ensure that transformation does take place. "While the media is privately owned but it services the interests of the people hence it should reflect the true demographics of the people it serves."
