DA KZN leader says eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede in a pay for play scandal

DA calls on ANC to come clean about ‘sponsorship for tenders’ allegations

31 July 2018

The DA in KwaZulu-Natal has written to the ANC Chair, Sihle Zikalala, asking the ANC to come clean about allegations that the party received sponsorship from companies in exchange for tenders.

According a newspaper report over the weekend, the eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede invited contractors to her house to donate money to the ANC in exchange for a contract to provide ablution facilities to schools in eThekwini.

The DA has been reliably informed that the donations amounted to R2.5 million for one contractor for vehicle branding, street pole banners, t-shirts and street posters.

We have also been informed that during the meeting at the mayor’s house, she allegedly provided the contractors with invoices of service providers that should be paid. If true, this proves that the mayor has direct links with supply chain maladministration. The DA will be taking this up with the Hawks for an urgent investigation.

All along we have been saying that the ANC is misusing public funds for their own gain. It is quite saddening that the contractors who are also trying to make a living are being exploited by greedy politicians like Gumede. It is clear that the governing party is still harbouring politicians who have lost all moral ground and who will misuse public funds at every chance they get.

The DA calls on the ANC to come clean and tell the people of eThekwini and the province if they are using unethical means to raise funds for the party by sourcing public funds for their campaign.

It is clear that the ANC is not serious about clean governance and real empowerment. The DA government is ready and waiting to bring change to the province and to release the people of eThekwini and KwaZulu-Natal of years of a greedy ANC government.
