ANC names premiers

NEC choses Nomvule Mokonyane to head Gauteng, Hazel Jenkins to head Northern Cape

ANC NEC STATEMENT ON PREMIER CANDIDATES AND PARLIAMENTARY APPOINTMENTS

The African National Congress (ANC) National Executive Committee (NEC) today (30 April 2009) concluded its meeting at Esselen Park in Johannesburg after deliberating on premier candidates and parliamentary appointments.

This follows recommendations by ANC Provincial Executive Committees of three names in each of the nine provinces, eight of which were won by the ANC in the 2009 elections.

Candidates approved for appointment as premiers in their respective provinces are:

Eastern Cape - Noxolo Kiviet
Free State - Ace Magashule
Gauteng - Nomvula Mokonyane
KwaZulu-Natal - Zweli Mkhize
Limpopo - Cassel Mathale
Mpumalanga - David Mabuza
Northern Cape - Hazel Jenkins
North West - Maureen Modiselle

In the Western Cape, Lynne Brown will play a role of shadow premier and will set up an ANC shadow provincial Cabinet.

The NEC also approved new appointments in the National Assembly and National Council of Provinces. The appointments are as follows:

National Assembly

Speaker - Max Sisulu
Deputy Speaker - NomaIndia Mfeketo
Chief Whip - Mathole Motshekga
Deputy Chief Whip - Gratitude Magwanishe

National Council of Provinces

Chairperson - MJ Mahlangu
Deputy Chairperson will be appointed once all names from the provinces have been submitted.
Chief Whip - Nosipho Ntwanambi
Nozizwe Madlala-Routlege will become Chairperson of ANC Caucus.
