DA LAYS CHARGES AGAINST FRAUDULENT VOTER REGISTRATIONS IN MIDVAAL
Midvaal Executive Mayor Timothy Nast yesterday laid charges of electoral fraud against eight people who registered to vote and gave non-existent addresses. Mayor Nast has met with Chief Electoral officer Pansy Tlakula on this matter, and the IEC has agreed to investigate DA objections in connection with over 100 voters who appear to be registered at phantom addresses. The DA intends to lay further charges should these addresses be found to be false.
"This is against the background of a determined ANC using every illegal means possible to try and win the successfully run DA council of Midvaal. Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane and her cabinet visited Meyerton using Provincial Government resources on Saturday to try and drum up ANC support," said Nast.
The DA also received reports of busses bringing ANC voters (who do not reside in the municipal area) to register in Midvaal. DA activists have taken photographs of these busses.
In addition, at the Randvaal voting station on Saturday, Edward Wenger, the husband of DA MP Marti Wenger, was allegedly assaulted by an ANC party agent and was arrested by the SAPS. Mr Wenger appeared in the Meyerton Magistrates court this morning after proceedings were delayed and the case was postponed for a week for further investigation. Mr Wenger has laid a counter charge of assault against the ANC party agent and a charge of unlawful arrest against the SAPS.
"It is totally unacceptable that the ANC appears to be prepared to break the law in order to wrestle control of Midvaal from the DA. The ANC should rather concentrate on providing better service delivery in municipalities that they govern, " said DA Gauteng Provincial Leader Janet Semple.
