ANCYL MEDIA STATEMENT CONDEMNING GANG RAPE AT JULES HIGH SCHOOL

The ANCYL is concerned about the alleged gang rape of a young school girl at Jules High School in Jeppestown, Johannesburg. The incident is extremely concerning especially because of the lack of concern by the school teachers alerted about the incident. This act of insensitive violence by young learners is indicative of the problems in society but the passive response by teachers is cause for concern as to the safety of young people in schools and the values that teachers are expected to dispense as guardians of youth in schools.

The ANCYL is extremely appalled by actions of violence by young people especially in this case of sexual violence committed by young men. The ANCYL calls for a very intensive and speedy investigation and trial. We call for the interests of the young woman to be protected and for her to receive adequate counselling and protection during this period. We further call on the school to provide her with utmost support as she completes her examination.

The ANCYL condemns any violent actions of young people, especially of young men as we proceed towards the 16 Days of Action against Abuse against Women and Children. Violence sexually and physically can never go unnoticed especially when young people are perpetrators. The ANCYL further calls for the prohibition of drugs and substances in schools to be reinforced by school management, police, community safety forums and parents. Drugs are contributing to the decay of our society and young people.

We urge all in society to come together in defeating any form of attack on our young people who are committed to getting an education and contributing meaningfully to the nation.
