ANCYL dismayed at govt's $2bn commitment to IMF

League says Fund is an oppressive organisation that limits development of developing world

ANCYL DISMAYED AT GOVERNMENT'S COMMITMENT OF $2 BILLION TO THE IMF

The ANCYL is shocked at the readiness of the South African Government to commit $2 billion to the IMF. This is rejected in the highest terms due to the reality that as we commemorate Youth month in South Africa, millions of young people are unemployed, face extreme poverty and economic inequalities.

The ANCYL condemns such an act with the understanding that the IMF has remained consistently biased and has not made any significant improvement in the lives of the people of Africa and South Africa. The IMF refuses reform, is committed to imperialism and continues to protect an old guard that perpetuates resistance to change.

In the midst of the dire economic challenges facing our people, especially young people who are unemployed and lack access to education; it would have been more appropriate for consideration to be given to educating the masses of young people and creating employment oppurtunities for the youth of South Africa.

The ANCYL is concerned that such decisions must be made in consideration of Government's due regard for the position of the IMF within the ANC, as the IMF has been seen as an oppressive organisation that limits the development of the developing world.

Worse is the indictment of the South African Government failure to commit to the working masses on the issue of the under paid workers in the public sector but rather seek to fund a global exercise of unemployment when young people in this country are unemployed and this challenge continues to hold the country in an economic stalemate.

The ANCYL impresses that our approach on international matters should not be at the expense of our people. The matter is elevated because the IMF has been correctly accused of advancing corruption and capitalist interest at the expense of the poor. South Africa must take responsibility for its internal economic failures and recuse itself from involvement with institutions that are corrupt and continue to perpetuate poor governance.
