ANCYL Statement on the NYDA
The African National Congress Youth League has noted with great concern the state of affairs at the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) emanating from the recent spate of suspensions starting with COO Ms Magdalene Moonsamy and now recently the CEO, Mr Steven Ngobeni, over allegations and counter allegations of corruption and misappropriation of funds.
The NYDA was established oversee integrated, broad-based youth development which is accessible to all young people in the country. The current state of affairs in the NYDA poses a challenge to the strategic objective of mainstreaming youth development in South Africa to deal with the immediate and pressing challenges facing young people being unemployment, lack of skills, disease and poverty.
The ANCYL rejects with contempt the opportunistic call made by opposition parties, calling for the dissolution of the NYDA. We would rather opt for a more constructive approach including a discussion aimed at strengthening the youth development agenda and considering the various options at hand, including the discussion on the Youth Ministry.
The ANCYL calls upon the Board of the NYDA to speedily resolve these challenges faced by the Agency and to move with urgency to stabilise its functioning. Furthermore, we call upon all structures of the Progressive Youth Alliance to defend the continued existence of the NYDA and assist in giving political guidance to the NYDA in discharging its mandate.
