ANCYL supports cleaners' demands

League fully behind minimum wage of R4,200 a month

ANC YOUTH LEAGUE SUPPORTS CLEANING WORKERS' DEMAND FOR A MINIMUM WAGE OF R4200 PER MONTH:

The African National Congress Youth League supports the demand of cleaning workers to have a minimum wage of R4200 per month. The ANC Youth League is behind the call because we are fully aware that in their majority, cleaners are females who take care of many other people in their families and communities.

The wages they are currently given can only take them to and from their work places, therefore making them slaves who work for nothing. There can be no other way to commemorate Women's Day than through a concrete programme and action to ensure that vulnerable workers, particularly females are protected and granted minimum wages in all sectors where minimum wages do not exist.

The ANC Youth League will soon meet with the Unions representing cleaning workers and take up all their demands to the Minister of Labour and the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Labour to ensure that there is legislation imposing a minimum wage in this sector. The ANC Youth League will at all times, take up struggles and concerns of workers, particularly vulnerable workers because our 24th National Congress mandated us to openly associate and mobilise for the interests of the working class and the poor.

Structures of the ANC YL at branch, regional, and provincial level are called upon to give all the necessary support to the striking workers until their demands are met. Cleaning workers who have not joined the strike are called upon to join the strike and soldier on until all their demands are met.
