Nature of charges can't be revealed as of yet

ANCYL Western Cape secretary suspended

Cape Town – The Western Cape ANC Youth League has suspended its provincial secretary Andile Mbali, provincial spokesperson Siyabulela Tom has said.

Tom told News24 on Friday that Mbali was suspended after an ANCYL Western Cape leadership meeting in Worcester on October 16.

He would face disciplinary charges at a hearing in November. Tom said he could not reveal the nature of the charges yet. A formal statement would be issued once a date for the hearing had been set.

His suspension will be reviewed after 15 days.

Deputy secretary Marisa van Rensburg would serve as acting provincial secretary.

In April, Mbali was criticised after openly calling for ANC Western Cape leader Marius Fransman to be reinstated, before his disciplinary hearing had been concluded.

Fransman was asked to step aside in January, pending a disciplinary process after he allegedly sexually assaulted his secretary. They were travelling from Cape Town to Rustenburg for the party's 104th anniversary celebrations on January 8.

Mbali said the Western Cape ANC needed Fransman for the local government elections in August, and that the party was unprepare while he was on leave.

Tom said, on behalf of the ANCYL leadership in April, that protocol needed to be followed in Fransman's case, and members should abstain from any attempt to divide, weaken or undermine the ANC.

Tom said the Western Cape leadership and entire party needed to prepare for the elections.
