Anglican Church not holier than thou! - SADTU

Union says disgraced Bishop Matt Esau was part of the synod that passed resolution on its members

Anglican Church not holier than thou!

SADTU finds it strange that the Anglican Church can call its followers who are members of SADTU to either transform or resign from the Union when the church has a priest who was convicted for fraud in 2007. Bishop Matt Esau was found guilty of misappropriating R500 000 from an Athlone NGO - Careers Resource Information Centre.

The money had been donated to the Centre by a US Government Aid agency. Esau was ordered to pay R100 000 to the agency and was sentenced to 104 hours of community service. He was suspended from the ministry for three years but the sentence was suspended for three years (see here).

We understand this priest was also in the same synod that took the resolution on SADTU members.

We also understand the church has priests in the United Kingdom, Australia and Zambia who have been charged and convicted for sexual offences. The church has no power to judge SADTU when they have a litany of scandals. They are not holier than thou.

We are of the view that the church has lost plot with its statement. If the church members pull out of the union that will not bring a solution to the problems the church think we have. We will appreciate it if the church can offer constructive criticism rather destructive one.
