Anglo American Platinum closes NUM offices at Union mine

Union says it remains majority union at Union mine, is being treated unfairly

NUM Condemns Angloplatinum over closure of offices

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) strongly condemns platinum company Angloplatinum over its closure of its offices at Union mine. The NUM remains a majority union at Union mine but continues to be treated unfairly and with disrepect by the ailing company inspite of the peace agreement entered into by the parties last week. The NUM strongly condemns the move to shut its offices at the insistence of its rival and the collusion by the London-listed ailing and beleaguered company which intends to retrench 14 000 workers and sabotage the country.

The move by the useless company which continues to loot South Africa 's mineral resources is part of the broader affront by mining companies in and around Rustenburg and part of the broader onslaught by business as we have seen in the Nedbank, FNB debacle. The aim is to weaken trade unions affiliated to COSATU and the ruling party with the hope of capturing power by hook or crook. The charge was led by Impala.

The NUM calls on its members, members of the alliance and civil society formations to rise up to the occasion and claim back what is rightfully ours.

Statement issued by Lesiba Seshoka- NUM National Spokesman, March 1 2013
