Annette Combrinck elected mayor of Potchefstroom - DA NWest

Chris Hattingh says DA candidate elected after ANC mayor lost a motion of no confidence

DA won Potchefstroom Mayoral seat!

Democratic Alliance  Councilor Annette Combrinck became the first DA Mayor in the North West after she narrowly defeated the ANC candidate, Lucky Tsagae. By 20 -19.

The mayoral seat was vacated in the early hours of this morning after an ANC driven motion of no-confidence in former Mayor Mapetle Mapetle was accepted with 37 votes against 13.

The successful motion was finally debated in the Tlokwe Council after weeks of intense ANC factional infighting and two premature adjournments of meetings of the Council earlier in November.

The successful ANC driven motion of no-confidence in an ANC Mayor is indicative of the instability and intense factional infighting in the North West Province. The intense factional struggle for power and the control of financial resources within the ANC has become endemic in the North West Province at both local government and provincial levels and goes hand in hand with the widespread collapse of service delivery and accountability as highlighted by almost every NW Auditor General Report.

Minutes after the defeat of the ANC mayoral candidate the ANC tabled a notice of a motion of no-confidence in the newly elected DA mayor, Annette Combrinck. This will most likely serve during a Council meeting during the following two months highlighting the unsustainability of the current mayoral position.

The DA will use the envisaged limited period of control to stabilize the municipality and to address aspects of serious non-delivery. And neglect.  One of the first items on the agenda of newly elected mayor Annette Combrinck will be the appointment of a new mayoral committee .
