Another horror farm discovered - Chris Hattingh

DA NWest leader says neglected pigs found eating pig corpses on state-owned Moria farm outside of Hartbeesfontein

Another NW horror farm uncovered

17 July 2014

The discovery of more neglected pigs, this time on the farm Moria, a state owned farm, just outside Hartebeesfontein, is indicative that the abuse and neglect of livestock in the NW may be of a greater extent than initially thought after the revelation of aggravated animal cruelty on Thandi Modise's horror farm.

Maritha Coetzee, DA councillor in the Matlosana Municipality, has since Sunday provided food and water for three pigs through holes in a wall after being informed that the pigs have been without food and water for a while. Another two pigs in the pen was already dead and was being eaten by the surviving pigs in the pen.

The agricultural unit of the National SPCA was informed of the situation and removed the pigs after obtaining a court order.

The farm, owned by the state, is under the management of the Matlosana Municipality and is used for Local Economic Development projects. Millions of Rands have been spent on the farm for, among others, a vegetable tunnel project - every project, however has led to a failure.

The farm Moria is across from the farm Syferlaagte located where the SPCA on a previous occasion euthanized on another NW Government agricultural project, 28 stud cattle, and recently a further two, which was also found in a shocking state of malnutrition.

The DA will insist on greater involvement of the NW Dept. of Agriculture in agriculture projects - it is clear that novice farmers are left mostly to themselves - without training, support or monitoring.
